Protect yourself.

You can protect your identity and your accounts by keeping your personal information, well, personal. Unless absolutely necessary for a legitimate business purpose, you should avoid giving out your:

  • Address and zip code
  • Phone number
  • Date of birth
  • Social security number
  • Card or account number
  • Card expiration date

But when it comes to your PIN, that’s for you to know and for no one to find out.
Never share your PIN numbers for cards or accounts.

You should also never respond to unsolicited emails that:

  • Ask you to verify your card or account number
  • Ask for any other kind of account information

FRAUD MONITORING, DETECTION, AND PROTECTION

The best way to deal with fraud is to prevent it from happening in the first place.

At SCU our goal is to minimize your risk of being the victim of fraud on your credit union accounts. To protect your account, we monitor all debit card and ATM transactions for potentially fraudulent activity through our dedicated Fraud Protection Program. Possible fraudulent activity may include a sudden change in location, a string of costly purchases, or any other pattern associated with new fraud trends.

If our fraud monitoring agency suspects fraudulent activity on your debit or ATM card, you will be contacted first by email. If you have opted in to receive text message notifications1, you will receive a text message with details about the suspected transaction. The text will come from a 5-digit SMS code.

A valid notification from us will provide information about the suspect transaction and ask you to reply to the text message with answers such as ‘yes ‘or ‘no’ and will never include a link.

If fraudulent debit card use is suspected on your SCU account and we cannot reach you by email or text message:

  • You will receive a call from us to validate the legitimacy of your transaction(s).
  • This will be an automated message.
  • We will attempt to call you twice. If we cannot get a hold of you, a letter will be mailed to the address we have on file.
  • Your participation in responding to our call is critical to prevent potential risk and avoid restrictions we may place on the use of your debit card.
  • The automated message will ask you to verify your identity and provide your 5-digit ZIP code. NO PERSONAL information will be asked.
  • You will be able to respond via your touchtone keypad.
  • If you confirm that a transaction is fraudulent, you will be transferred to an associate who will ask questions to confirm your identity before going through your transactions.
  • You will also be provided a toll-free number to call should you have additional questions.

To ensure we can continue to reach you whenever potential fraud is detected, please always keep us informed of your correct phone numbers (cell, home, and work) and address.

If you believe you received fraudulent text or email message…

Please contact us immediately at 888-599-2265. We will be more than happy to assist in making sure your accounts and cards are protected.

1Text message is an optional feature. To enroll in the text message feature, please contact us at 888-599-2265 or email info@southbridgecu.com.
